Anthropology is a bebop composition by Charlie Parker, first recorded on March 28, 1946, by the Charlie Parker All Stars for Dial Records, featuring Miles Davis on trumpet, Bud Powell on piano, Tommy Potter on bass, and Max Roach on drums. It is a contrafact built on the chord changes of I Got Rhythm, making it one of many Parker originals that reimagine standard harmonic progressions with new, intricate melodies. The head is characterized by rapid scalar runs, chromatic lines, and rhythmic displacement that exemplify Parker's virtuosic approach to composition. Notable features include doubled harmonic rhythm in the final measures of each A section, which gives the melody a propulsive, snapping quality. The tune has become a cornerstone of the bebop repertoire and a rite-of-passage piece for jazz improvisers, widely performed at jam sessions and included in every edition of the Real Book. Its challenging melody and familiar changes have attracted interpretations spanning hard bop, cool jazz, and chamber jazz, including versions by Clifford Brown, Sonny Rollins, and the Modern Jazz Quartet. In the AllSolos library, Parker's original 1945 recording with Miles Davis and Sadik Hakim from The Complete Savoy and Dial Master Takes is available alongside Clifford Jordan and Art Farmer's hard bop reading on Cliff Craft, and Chad Lefkowitz-Brown's modern take on Charlie Parker Tribute with Steven Feifke and Bryan Carter.
