Straight, No Chaser is an original blues composition by Thelonious Monk, written in the 1940s and first recorded on July 23, 1951, for Blue Note Records on Genius of Modern Music, Volume Two. That debut session featured Sahib Shihab on alto saxophone, Milt Jackson on vibes, Al McKibbon on bass, and Art Blakey on drums. The tune's genius lies in its construction from a single short blues riff that repeats eleven times across the twelve-bar form, with each statement varied through rhythmic displacement, shifted downbeats, and subtle extensions. The result is a melody that sounds deceptively simple on first hearing but reveals remarkable structural ingenuity upon closer study, building complexity entirely through rhythmic manipulation rather than harmonic or melodic elaboration. This approach epitomizes Monk's compositional philosophy of extracting maximum depth from minimal material. The tune quickly became a jazz standard, with Miles Davis's influential 1958 version on Milestones featuring John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley, and Bill Evans standing as one of the most celebrated recordings. Monk himself revisited it many times, including on the 1967 Columbia album that bears the tune's name. In the AllSolos library, the Miles Davis sextet's recording from the '58 Sessions features solos by Davis, Coltrane, Adderley, and Evans, while Chad Lefkowitz-Brown and Steven Feifke perform it on Thelonious Monk Tribute, and Randy Brecker joins Chad Lefkowitz-Brown and Emmet Cohen on the Live From Emmet's Place version.
