Star-Crossed Lovers was composed by Billy Strayhorn and Duke Ellington as part of Such Sweet Thunder, the Ellington orchestra's 1957 suite inspired by the works of William Shakespeare. First recorded by Duke Ellington and His Orchestra on December 6, 1956, the piece was released on Such Sweet Thunder on Columbia Records in September 1957. The composition takes its name from Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, and within the suite it serves as a lyrical, intimate counterpoint to the more exuberant movements. The tune is sometimes listed under the fuller title The Star-Crossed Lovers and has also been referred to as Pretty Girl. As a standalone piece, it occupies a deep-cut status in the Ellington-Strayhorn catalog rather than ranking among their most frequently performed standards, though it has attracted periodic attention from jazz artists drawn to the richness of the Such Sweet Thunder material. Baritone saxophonist Pepper Adams recorded a notable cover version. The original recording features key Ellington sidemen including Clark Terry on trumpet, Jimmy Woode on bass, and Sam Woodyard on drums. On AllSolos, Star-Crossed Lovers is represented through a performance from Emmet Cohen's Live From Emmet's Place Vol. 56 featuring Joe Lovano on tenor saxophone, offering a small-group reinterpretation of this orchestral ballad in a modern live setting.
