"Village Blues" is an original composition by John Coltrane, recorded on October 21, 1960, during sessions that also produced material for the My Favorite Things album. The tune appeared on Coltrane's Coltrane Jazz album, released on Atlantic Records in January 1961. The recording holds particular historical significance as the first studio session to feature Coltrane alongside pianist McCoy Tyner and drummer Elvin Jones, who would go on to form the backbone of his celebrated "classic quartet" from 1960 to 1965, with bassist Steve Davis completing the rhythm section. The composition emerged during a pivotal transitional period in Coltrane's career, shortly after his departure from Miles Davis's band in spring 1960, when he formed his first touring quartet for a residency at the Jazz Gallery club in Manhattan. "Village Blues" represents Coltrane as a composer of original material during his early years as a bandleader, documenting his emerging artistic direction as he moved into his own vision. An alternate take from the same session was released on the 2000 reissue of the album. The tune has been covered by a range of artists over the decades, including Paul Gonsalves, David Liebman, Robben Ford, and Jim McNeely, though it remains more of a deep cut in Coltrane's catalog than a widely performed standard.
