"Fox Hunt" is an original jazz composition by pianist and composer Arcoiris Sandoval, first recorded on her Sonic Asylum Trio's debut album First Voyage, released in 2018. The piece is an uptempo, high-energy vehicle driven by a fast swing feel, lending it a pursuit-like momentum well suited to virtuosic improvisation. Sandoval wrote the tune as part of her Sonic Asylum project, which she launched in 2016, and it sits alongside other originals on First Voyage such as "Sonic Asylum" and "Journey to Agartha," as well as arrangements of jazz standards. The composition earned recognition as an ASCAP award-winning work, reflecting Sandoval's standing as a two-time recipient of the ASCAP Young Jazz Composer Award in 2013 and 2015. A notable early performance of "Fox Hunt" took place in February 2016 at the Baruch College Performing Arts Center, where Sandoval's group was joined by alto saxophonist Jaleel Shaw, demonstrating the tune's adaptability from trio to quintet settings. Sandoval, originally from Tucson, Arizona and based in New York City, has brought her original repertoire to venues including Lincoln Center and festivals such as Winter Jazzfest and the Tucson Jazz Festival, supported by grants from Chamber Music America and South Arts. "Fox Hunt" remains primarily associated with Sandoval's own ensembles and has not yet entered wide circulation among other performers.
