"Maroon Nebula" is an original composition by pianist and composer Arcoiris Sandoval, written as part of her debut album First Voyage (2018) with the Sonic Asylum Trio. The piece belongs to a suite of six originals inspired by astronomy and environmental themes, reflecting Sandoval's fascination with cosmic phenomena and synesthesia, the sensory condition in which one type of stimulation evokes the sensation of another. As its title suggests, the composition evokes the vastness and swirling beauty of interstellar nebulae, channeling those images into an introspective yet energizing musical statement. Sandoval, a two-time ASCAP Young Jazz Composer Award winner who holds a Master's degree in jazz piano from the Manhattan School of Music, brings a contemporary harmonic sensibility to the piece, setting it in a waltz feel that distinguishes it from more conventional swing or straight-eighth jazz writing. The atmospheric, contemplative character of "Maroon Nebula" exemplifies the Sonic Asylum project's emphasis on music as a healing and transformative force. Beyond its original trio recording, the piece has been performed by the Golden Ratio Project in a reimagined arrangement, though it remains primarily associated with Sandoval's own performances. The composition stands as a representative example of Sandoval's ability to translate visual and scientific imagery into compelling modern jazz.
