Blues for the Down and Out is an original jazz composition by Toronto-based pianist and composer Anthony D'Alessandro. Written in the blues idiom, the piece was first documented in a live studio performance at Upper Jazz Studio in Toronto on April 17, 2019, and later appeared on D'Alessandro's debut album as a leader, Searchin', released in April 2024. The album features Benny Benack III on trumpet and vocals, Neil Swainson on bass, and Ernesto Cervini on drums. Within the arc of the Searchin' album, Blues for the Down and Out provides a shift toward more introspective territory following two danceable opening tracks, its contemplative character appropriate to its evocative title. Reviewers have described the album's arrangements as radiant, complete, and visionary, and D'Alessandro has been praised by The WholeNote magazine for his natural sense of swing and groove and dazzling technique. D'Alessandro has built recognition across Canada, having toured coast-to-coast with JUNO Award-winning vocalist Caity Gyorgy and spent time studying and performing in New York. The composition represents one of five originals on the Searchin' album, each exploring different facets of D'Alessandro's musical palette. It remains primarily associated with D'Alessandro's own recordings and performances, with no documented cover versions by other artists.
