Outbreak is an original jazz composition by Toronto-based pianist and composer Anthony D'Alessandro, written during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020-2021. D'Alessandro has acknowledged the title is intentionally on the nose but has expressed hope that the piece will detach from its pandemic-era origins over time. The composition is characterized as a punchy swing tune with driving rhythm and bold melodic lines, capturing an energetic, forward-propelling character that distinguishes it from the more laid-back grooves found elsewhere on the album. It first appeared on D'Alessandro's debut album as a leader, Searchin', released April 26, 2024, featuring Benny Benack III on trumpet and vocals, Neil Swainson on bass, and Ernesto Cervini on drums. The album showcases D'Alessandro's range through five original compositions, each drawing from different facets of his musical influences, including a calypso-inspired piece, a jazz waltz, and arrangements of standards. Paris-Move described the album's varied arrangements as radiant and visionary. As a recent original composition, Outbreak has not yet entered the broader jazz repertoire, and no cover versions by other artists have been documented. Its significance lies in highlighting the creative output of emerging Canadian jazz talent through high-profile collaborations.
