Paul Chambers Quintet was recorded on January 19, 1958 at Rudy Van Gelder's studio and released on Blue Note Records, one of the rare leader dates for the bassist best known for his work in the Miles Davis Quintet. The quintet features Donald Byrd on trumpet, Clifford Jordan on tenor saxophone, Tommy Flanagan on piano, and Elvin Jones on drums. The six-track program consists of originals alongside the standard "Softly, as in a Morning Sunrise" and "What's New." As a leader date, the album gives Chambers more solo space than his sideman recordings typically allowed, and his arco (bowed) bass work is prominently featured. Byrd's bright trumpet and Jordan's robust tenor create a strong two-horn front line, while Flanagan's elegant piano and Jones's powerful drumming provide a rhythm section of exceptional quality. Chambers was one of the most recorded bassists of the late 1950s, appearing on landmark sessions for Blue Note, Prestige, and Columbia as the first-call bassist for producers like Alfred Lion and Bob Weinstock.
