Recorded over three days in late February 1955 in New York, Study in Brown is the third studio album by the Clifford Brown and Max Roach Quintet, featuring Harold Land on tenor saxophone, Richie Powell on piano, and George Morrow on bass. Released on EmArcy Records, the album captures the group at the height of its powers, blending uptempo standards with Brown's inventive originals in a hard bop style defined by tight ensemble work and expansive soloing. Brown's trumpet playing — fast, agile, and melodically rich — is the album's center of gravity, matched by Roach's dynamic and responsive drumming. The program opens with a dazzling reading of Ray Noble's "Cherokee" and includes Brown's originals "Sandu," which became a widely performed jazz standard, and "Gerkin for Perkin," alongside pieces by Powell and Land.
