New for Now is guitarist Jonathan Kreisberg's second album for Criss Cross Records, recorded on October 13, 2004 in Brooklyn with organist Gary Versace on Hammond B3 and drummer Mark Ferber. The organ trio format gives the album a different character from Kreisberg's previous recording Unearth, moving toward a more traditional jazz center while maintaining an exploratory sensibility. The program splits evenly between four Kreisberg originals and four standards, with the standards receiving inventive rhythmic treatments: "Gone with the Wind" is rearranged in 5/4, alternating between staggered accents and swinging passages, while "All or Nothing at All" is recast in 7/4. Thelonious Monk's "Ask Me Now" draws a stride-like self-accompanied guitar reading from Kreisberg, with Versace transferring Monk's angular humor to the organ. The title track's demanding harmonic changes test both soloists. All About Jazz praised the album's balance of tradition and adventure, noting that Kreisberg had done his homework in evolving from fusion-influenced playing into a modern mainstream voice. The working trio's chemistry, developed through regular performance together, is evident in the fluid transitions and spontaneous interplay throughout.
