Recorded on May 24, 1956 at Rudy Van Gelder's studio in Hackensack, New Jersey, Tenor Madness is a Sonny Rollins quartet session for Prestige Records that borrows the Miles Davis Quintet rhythm section of Red Garland on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums. The album is best known for its title track, the only recorded meeting between Rollins and John Coltrane — who was then playing in Davis's band and sat in for this one blues-based performance. The twelve-minute track became a touchstone for tenor saxophone battles, with the two saxophonists trading ideas over a simple harmonic framework. Beyond that historic encounter, the remaining four tracks feature Rollins in a quartet setting, including his original "Paul's Pal" — dedicated to bassist Chambers — and readings of "My Reverie," "The Most Beautiful Girl in the World," and "When Your Lover Has Gone." The session captures Rollins at a prolific peak: it was recorded the same year as Saxophone Colossus, the album generally regarded as his masterpiece. Produced by Bob Weinstock, Tenor Madness exemplifies the informal, single-session recording approach that defined Prestige's catalog, prioritizing spontaneous blowing over extensive rehearsal or arrangement.
