Bronisław Kaper's film theme turned jazz standard receives an extended workout in this 2018 recording from tenor saxophonist Chad Lefkowitz-Brown's Standard Sessions series. Pianist Steven Feifke joins Lefkowitz-Brown for what amounts to the most expansive pair of solos in the early Standard Sessions catalog — each musician takes four full choruses of the 32-bar ABAB' form at a medium-up swing tempo around 210 beats per minute. The result is nearly six minutes of continuous improvisation between the two soloists alone. The tune's structure, which alternates between a Latin-inflected A section and a swinging B section, provides natural contrasts for the soloists to play with, shifting feel and energy within each chorus. Lefkowitz-Brown's four-chorus arc builds steadily from melodic statements to more rhythmically intense ideas, while Feifke's equally generous solo space allows him to develop extended musical narratives on piano. The recording captures both musicians in an unhurried, conversational mode — the kind of deep exploration that the standard session format was designed to encourage, where familiar material becomes a launching pad for extended improvisation.
