"On Green Dolphin Street" (often shortened to "Green Dolphin Street") is a composition by Bronislaw Kaper with lyrics by Ned Washington, originally written for the 1947 MGM film Green Dolphin Street starring Lana Turner. Kaper, a Polish-born composer who had fled Europe during the rise of Nazism, was working under contract at MGM when he wrote the film's score, which won the Academy Award for Best Special Effects though the song itself was not nominated. The first recording was by the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra in October 1947, but the tune remained relatively obscure until Miles Davis recorded it in 1958 with John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley, and Bill Evans — a performance that transformed it into a major jazz standard almost overnight. The composition's distinctive feature is its A sections, which use a pedal point on the tonic note while the chords move chromatically above it through a series of major seventh chords, creating an unusual sense of harmonic motion against a stationary bass. Jazz musicians typically play the A sections with a Latin feel before shifting to swing on the bridge, though this convention comes from the jazz tradition rather than Kaper's original score. The tune has been recorded over 460 times by artists including Bill Evans, Sarah Vaughan, Ahmad Jamal, and Eric Dolphy, and its harmonic richness has made it equally appealing to mainstream and avant-garde jazz musicians.
