About
Closing out the solo section, this piano improvisation spans two choruses of the 68-bar form at a brisk 300 BPM. Pianist Peter Zak follows with two equally intense choruses at an even faster clip of around 300 BPM. The 68-bar form provides a defined harmonic landscape for the improvisation. At 300 BPM, the sheer velocity demands extraordinary technical facility and split-second harmonic decision-making. Coming after Sam Dillon's tenor sax solo, this is the final improvisation before the ensemble returns to the head.
Peter Zak was 52 to 53 years old at the time.
