About
Closing out the solo section, this tenor sax improvisation spans two choruses of the 32-bar ABAC form at a medium swing tempo of 147 BPM. The 3/4 meter adds an additional layer of rhythmic complexity. The recording's most electric moment comes when John Coltrane enters for two riveting choruses of tenor saxophone, his sheets-of-sound approach creating a dramatic contrast with Mobley's more conventional style. The 32-bar ABAC form, with its non-repeating final section, offers harmonic variety and a sense of forward motion through the changes. Coming after Wynton Kelly's piano solo, this is the final improvisation before the ensemble returns to the head.
John Coltrane was 34 to 35 years old at the time.
