Recorded over three sessions in March 1961 at Columbia's 30th Street Studio, Someday My Prince Will Come captures Miles Davis's sextet during a period of transition. Cannonball Adderley and John Coltrane had both departed to lead their own groups, and tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley had stepped in as the primary horn alongside Davis. Coltrane returned for two tracks — the title piece and "Teo" — making this album their final recorded studio encounter. The title track, a waltz drawn from Disney's Snow White, became a highlight for the contrasting solos by Mobley, mellow and flowing, and Coltrane, intense and searching, heard back to back over the same changes. Wynton Kelly's piano, Paul Chambers' bass, and Jimmy Cobb's drums anchor the date, with Philly Joe Jones appearing on the bonus track "Blues No. 2." The program balances standards like "I Thought About You" and "Old Folks" with Davis originals dedicated to people in his life: "Pfrancing" for his wife Frances, "Teo" for producer Teo Macero, and "Drad-Dog" for Columbia president Goddard Lieberson. Released on Columbia Records, the album has endured as a cohesive and underrated entry in Davis's catalog, bridging the modal explorations of Kind of Blue and the further experimentation that followed.
