About
Hank Mobley's tenor saxophone solo opens the improvisation on "Just You, Just Me" from the 1956 Tenor Conclave album. He takes two choruses of the 32-bar AABA form at 235 BPM in E-flat, his warm, rounded tone and fluid phrasing setting the pace for the four-way tenor comparison that follows. As the session's organizer and composer of several of its tunes, Mobley leads by example with a relaxed, confident statement on Jesse Greer's standard. He is followed by Zoot Sims, John Coltrane, and Al Cohn, with Red Garland closing the solo section on piano.
Hank Mobley was 25 to 26 years old at the time.
