About
Hank Mobley's tenor saxophone solo is the third of six solos on his own composition "Bob's Boys" from the 1956 Tenor Conclave album, following John Coltrane and Al Cohn. He takes four choruses of the 12-bar blues form at 196 BPM in F, playing his own blues with the warm, rounded tone and unhurried swing that characterized his approach. As the composer, Mobley has an intimate feel for the tune's blues framework, and his solo balances melodic accessibility with harmonic sophistication. He is followed by Zoot Sims, Red Garland, and Paul Chambers.
Hank Mobley was 25 to 26 years old at the time.
