About
Closing out the solo section, this piano improvisation spans one and a half choruses of the 32-bar ABAC form at a medium-up swing tempo of 153 BPM. The 3/4 meter adds an additional layer of rhythmic complexity. This is the most concise solo on the recording, making every phrase count within a compact space. The 32-bar ABAC form, with its non-repeating final section, offers harmonic variety and a sense of forward motion through the changes. Coming after Hank Mobley's tenor sax solo, this is the final improvisation before the ensemble returns to the head.
Wynton Kelly was 29 to 30 years old at the time.
