About
Eric Dolphy's flute solo is the second of four improvisations on this recording, following Hubbard's trumpet. Taking three choruses of the 12-bar blues in C minor at 117 BPM, Dolphy brings his characteristically angular approach to the flute, his wide intervals and unexpected rhythmic accents creating a solo that stands in vivid contrast to Hubbard's more lyrical statement. Dolphy's flute playing on this track is among his most celebrated work on the instrument, his ability to find unexpected beauty within unconventional melodic shapes perfectly suited to Nelson's sophisticated blues conception.
Eric Dolphy was 32 to 33 years old at the time.
