About
Sonny Rollins's tenor sax solo is the last of four solos on this recording, following Shelly Manne on drums. Spanning two choruses of the 40-bar ABAC form in B♭ at a vigorous 227 BPM with a swing feel, Rollins then returns for two more fiery choruses, pushing the tempo even higher as the trio locks into an increasingly intense groove. "Come, Gone" is a contrafact built on the chord changes of "After You've Gone," requiring the soloist to navigate a familiar harmonic framework with a different melodic identity. Sonny Rollins was 26 to 27 years old at the time of this recording.
