One Finger Snap is a post-bop composition by Herbie Hancock, written over a two-year period and first recorded on June 17, 1964 for his landmark Blue Note album Empyrean Isles. The tune is built on a fast-tempo, non-repetitive single-section form rather than a traditional AABA structure, opening with a simple four-note motive that recurs with variations in pitch, rhythm, and intervals throughout. The melody moves stepwise, descending in the first eight bars and ascending in the next, over a complex and challenging harmonic progression featuring suspended fourths, Aeolian motion, pedal points, and subsets of the melodic minor scale that create tonal ambiguity and avoid frequent functional dominants. These elements demand tight ensemble interplay and make the tune a formidable vehicle for improvisation. The original recording on Empyrean Isles features Freddie Hubbard on cornet, Ron Carter on bass, and Tony Williams on drums alongside Hancock's piano, and an alternate take was included on the 1999 CD reissue. While less universally known than Cantaloupe Island from the same album, One Finger Snap holds an important place in the post-bop repertoire and is widely studied for its motivic development and harmonic ingenuity. The Chad LB Quartet performed the tune on their 2021 Standards Night session with solos from Chad Lefkowitz-Brown on tenor saxophone, Steven Feifke on piano, Dan Chmielinski on bass, and Bryan Carter on drums.
