Quartet Sessions - Chad Lefkowitz-Brown

Quartet Sessions is tenor saxophonist Chad Lefkowitz-Brown's eighth release as a leader, recorded across two sessions in Brooklyn — the first at 5th House in October 2019 and the second at 718 Studios in February 2020. Each session features a different rhythm section: pianist Holger Marjamaa, bassist Dan Chmielinski, and drummer Bryan Carter on one date, and pianist Steven Feifke, bassist Alex Claffy, and drummer Corey Fonville on the other. The repertoire spans jazz standards, Great American Songbook tunes, and a few unexpected choices like Paul McCartney's "Yesterday" and Herbie Hancock's "Watermelon Man," all arranged by ear to preserve a spontaneous, in-the-moment feel. Lefkowitz-Brown's muscular tenor sound, rooted in the tradition of Sonny Rollins and Dexter Gordon, drives the album, with the two quartets offering complementary but distinct rhythmic personalities. All About Jazz praised it as one of the year's sharpest tenor outings, and UK Jazz News highlighted the accessible energy and strong ensemble interplay throughout. Recorded and mixed by Matt Marantz with mastering by Noah Kellman, the album was released on La Reserve Records during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic, continuing Lefkowitz-Brown's prolific output as both a performer and online educator.
