Joshua Redman's self-titled debut was released on Warner Bros. Records in 1993, the same year as his follow-up Wish. The album arrived on the strength of Redman's 1991 victory at the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competition, which led to his record deal after he deferred admission to Yale Law School to pursue music full-time. The program mixes Redman originals with standards, performed in a quartet setting that showcases his robust tenor sound, fluid technique, and lyrical improvisation. At twenty-four, Redman was part of the "Young Lions" movement — a cohort of young acoustic jazz musicians signed to major labels during the early 1990s — and the album captured the confidence and polish of a musician who seemed to arrive fully formed. It was nominated for a Grammy Award and established Redman as one of the most prominent saxophonists of his generation, leading to a series of subsequent Warner Bros. releases including Wish, MoodSwing with pianist Brad Mehldau, and Spirit of the Moment. The straightforward, swinging approach on this debut set the foundation for the more varied explorations that followed.
