Live From Emmet's Place Vol. 56 - Joe Lovano

A 2021 installment of the Live From Emmet's Place series featuring tenor saxophone legend Joe Lovano alongside pianist Emmet Cohen, bassist Russell Hall, and drummer Kyle Poole. This extended concert spans a broad program including stride-era and Fats Waller material, several Lovano originals, Ellington and Strayhorn compositions, and standard repertoire. The session showcases multiple facets of Lovano's artistry: his eight-chorus solo on his own Confirmation contrafact at 204 BPM in A-flat, a sixteen-chorus blues solo at 185 BPM, a ten-chorus exploration of his 24-bar original in G, and intimate ballad work on a Strayhorn-Ellington piece at 56 BPM in D-flat and Johnny Green's Body and Soul at 65 BPM. Cohen delivers extended piano solos throughout, including a ten-chorus blues and a commanding opening statement on a Willie The Lion Smith tune at 235 BPM. Hall contributes bass solos on multiple pieces including an eight-chorus blues and a Lovano original with Latin feel. Poole's drum solo on a Lovano original in B-flat rounds out the full-group showcase. The concert captures a cross-generational summit between the veteran Lovano and the younger rhythm section.
