About
Emma Rawicz's tenor saxophone solo on Green Dolphin Street is the second of three solos in this Brubeck Institute video performance. She improvises for three choruses over the 32-bar ABAB' form at 192 BPM with a Latin feel, bringing rhythmic agility and melodic invention to Bronislaw Kaper's composition. The Latin groove provides a different context from the preceding uptempo swing of Take the "A" Train, and Rawicz adapts her approach accordingly, incorporating syncopated phrasing and longer melodic arcs that ride the rhythmic pulse. At 17 to 18 years old, her ability to shift convincingly between stylistic contexts within a single performance speaks to the musical versatility that would later gain her wider recognition in the British and international jazz scenes.
Emma Rawicz was 17 to 18 years old at the time.
