About
Charlie Shavers's partial-chorus trumpet solo is the sole improvisation on this swinging reading of Brooks Bowman's 1934 standard. Spanning roughly sixteen bars of the 36-bar ABAC form at 123 BPM in C, Shavers adds a brassy spark to the proceedings with his brilliant technique and showmanship. Though brief at less than half a chorus, the solo demonstrates the art of saying something meaningful in a limited space. Shavers's bright, clear tone provides the perfect instrumental foil for Billie Holiday's vocal interpretation on this intimate small-group session from the Solitude album.
Charlie Shavers was 31 to 32 years old at the time.
