Empyrean Isles is Herbie Hancock's fourth album for Blue Note Records, released in 1964. The quartet features Freddie Hubbard on cornet, Ron Carter on bass, and Tony Williams on drums — the latter two being Hancock's bandmates in the Miles Davis Quintet. The album consists of four Hancock originals, each designed as a flexible framework for improvisation rather than a tightly composed melody. "One Finger Snap" opens with a bracing 20-bar form that launches into extended soloing, while "The Egg" stretches past fourteen minutes into abstract, free-leaning territory. The centerpiece is "Cantaloupe Island," whose funky, riff-based groove became one of the most recognizable themes in jazz and was later sampled by Us3 for the 1993 hip-hop hit "Cantaloop (Flip Fantasia)." Hancock has said the compositions were inspired by a story about mythical islands, and that he titled each piece only after it was completed, based on the mood the music evoked. The album marks a turning point in Hancock's Blue Note catalog, moving beyond the soul jazz of Takin' Off and the Latin percussion experiments of Inventions and Dimensions toward a more open, boundary-testing approach. Along with its successor Maiden Voyage, it is considered the peak of Hancock's acoustic work from the 1960s.
