A Night at Birdland Vol 2 - Art Blakey Quintet

A Night at Birdland Vol. 2 continues the recording from the same February 21, 1954 engagement at Birdland documented on Vol. 1, released on Blue Note Records in 1956. The same quintet — Clifford Brown on trumpet, Lou Donaldson on alto saxophone, Horace Silver on piano, Curly Russell on bass, and Art Blakey on drums — performs seven additional tracks from the evening, including Charlie Parker's "Confirmation" and "Now's the Time," "The Way You Look Tonight," and Donaldson's blues "Lou's Blues." The second volume maintains the intensity and cohesion of the first, with the quintet playing as a tight unit despite the concert's informal, blowing-session format. Brown's trumpet work throughout is remarkable for its clarity and invention, while Donaldson's alto brings a more melodic, blues-inflected counterpoint to Brown's harmonic sophistication. Silver's piano anchors the rhythm section, and Blakey's drumming provides the driving pulse that would become the defining characteristic of his Jazz Messengers groups in the years that followed.
