Recorded on October 30, 1958 by Rudy Van Gelder at his Hackensack studio, Moanin' marked Art Blakey's return to Blue Note Records and features what is often considered the strongest studio edition of the Jazz Messengers: Lee Morgan on trumpet, Benny Golson on tenor saxophone, Bobby Timmons on piano, and Jymie Merritt on bass. Originally self-titled, the album was later renamed after its opening track, a Bobby Timmons composition whose gospel-tinged, call-and-response melody became one of the most recognizable themes in jazz. Golson contributed four of the album's six pieces, including "Along Came Betty" and "Blues March," both of which entered the jazz standard repertoire. "Blues March" evokes the sound of New Orleans marching bands, while "Along Came Betty" takes a more lyrical, sinuous approach. The three-part "Drum Thunder Suite" was written specifically to showcase Blakey's drumming across contrasting movements. The album's blend of blues feeling, hard-swinging energy, and tight ensemble writing defined the hard bop aesthetic and established a template the Jazz Messengers would follow through decades of rotating lineups. AllMusic awarded it five stars, and it is consistently listed among the essential recordings in both Blakey's catalog and the broader jazz canon.
